[ the green pearl ]

haren, the town i live in, had been an agricultural village for ages. but as prosperity grew in the neighbouring city of groningen, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, increasing numbers of middle class people from the city could afford to move to the rural village haren, to live in nice houses with gardens and a healthy environment.

dirt roads in the jerkwater town haren were paved, and villas were built along the tree-lined lanes. haren became a wealthy village of commuters, and the town was nicknamed 'the green pearl'. its inhabitants got the reputation of being rich snobs.

nevertheless the town also has ordinary terraced houses, messy areas, overgrown unplaces, as well as abandoned and derelict facilities.

it is this side of 'the green pearl' that i depict in this series.
